VISIT BODEGAS FRANCO-ESPAÑOLAS [LA RIOJA]
The history of Bodegas Franco-Españolas began in 1890 by Frederick Anglade Saurat, a Frenchman from Bordeaux, at a key moment for the Rioja region, when the French were looking to replace their vineyards damaged by phylloxera. His first vintage gave rise to the winery's iconic wines, such as Diamante and Estilo Borgoña, later renamed Rioja Bordón and, in 2017, simply Bordón.
In 1920, the winery became fully Spanish after the sale of French shares. Over the years, it received visits from personalities such as King Alfonso XIII and Ernest Hemingway. The end of Prohibition in the U.S. in 1933 and the revival of the Control Board in 1953 boosted exports of its wines.
In 1984, Marcos Eguizábal acquired the winery, and under his direction, they celebrated their first centenary in 1990. Subsequently, in 2016, Borja Eguizábal took over the management, representing the third generation of the family. In 2017, the Bordón wine was relaunched with a renewed concept: "Unabashedly classic”.
