VISIT BODEGAS LUSTAU WINERY [JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA]
The history of Bodegas Lustau dates back to 1896 when it was created by Don José Ruiz-Berdejo, who was a court clerk. He began cultivating vineyards on his property, Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza, where he produced wines that he sold to large exporting wineries, acting as a warehouseman.
In 1931 his daughter, María Ruiz-Berdejo Alberti, bought a winery in Callejón de Asta and moved the production of the family wines to Jerez.
During the 1940s, Emilio Lustau Ortega, María's husband, moved the winery to the Santiago neighborhood, in the center of Jerez de la Frontera, in buildings that were part of the old Arab walls. Initially it remained a warehouseman, but in 1945 it began to market wines and brandies under its own brands, such as Papirusa, Jarana and others. By 1950, Lustau was already exporting its products.
In the 1980s, under the direction of Rafael Balao, Lustau stood out for its innovative approach to sherry. During this decade, they launched the Solera Familiar range, the Almacenista line and began production of Añadas. In 1988, they introduced a distinctive and exclusive bottle that reinforced their identity in the market.
In 1990, the winery was acquired by Luis Caballero, a company specializing in spirits. This acquisition provided significant financial backing, enabling Lustau to grow and expand.
In 2000, Lustau purchased six old 19th century winery buildings in the center of Jerez, which were restored respecting their original design. Today, these buildings house the winery's main facilities.
