Solar eclipse in Ribera del Duero: hiking and underground cellar at Casajús
ECLIPSE AT BODEGAS CASAJÚS [12.08.26]
Bodegas Casajús, in Quintana del Pidio (Burgos), has put together an active day around the total solar eclipse for August 12, 2026: a hike through the Ribera del Duero landscape, a visit to a 16th-century underground cellar, and, to close, viewing the eclipse from a natural viewpoint only reachable on foot.
The group will be small, and the whole route will be guided in English by the Casajús family themselves. The winery has designed the day at an unhurried pace, closer to the way the family spends its own summers than to a standard scheduled tour.
"We didn't want to offer just another way to watch the eclipse. We want the people who choose to experience it with us to do it the way we would with friends, glass in hand, in what is for us one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Ribera del Duero," say the family behind the winery.
PROGRAM (guided tour in English)
- 5:00 PM — Reception and welcome at Bodegas Casajús. Introduction to the family history and the winery's approach.
- 5:10–6:00 PM — Guided tour of the production cellar, with a tasting straight from the barrel of one of their signature wines.
- 6:00–6:10 PM — Walk to the historic quarter of traditional cellars.

ABOUT BODEGAS CASAJÚS
The winery grows 20 hectares of its own vineyard on sandy-loam soils, sheltered from the north winds by pine and holm oak hills. Most of the vines are Tinta del País (Tempranillo), over 70 years old and trained using traditional bush pruning. The microclimate of Quintana del Pidio, within the D.O. Ribera del Duero, combines cold winters with dry summers and sharp temperature swings between day and night, which favors slow grape ripening.
Beneath the village lies a network of traditional cellars dug in the 16th century, among them the Bodega La Iglesia, part of the family's history and now included in the visit.
