VISITING BODEGA VALDEALTO | SIERRA DE LA MONEDA [MÉRIDA, EXTREMADURA]

Valdealto is a family winery founded in 1999 by Álvaro de Alvear, in the Sierra de la Moneda, just 12 km from Mérida, the Roman city that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the capital of Extremadura. The Alvear family's connection to the world of wine dates back to the 17th century, when an ancestor was posted to Córdoba and planted vineyards in Montilla, founding in 1729 what would become one of the oldest wineries in Spain. That winegrowing vocation of more than 300 years culminated in Valdealto, where the next generation of the family continues today a project deeply rooted in the territory.

The estate covers 116 hectares in the Sierra de la Moneda, of which 36 are planted with vines and the rest are Mediterranean woodland and scrubland that supports notable biodiversity. Beneath the vines lie the remains of a 1st-century Roman villa, one of the most singular features of this estate and a reflection of the long winegrowing history of the Mérida region. The winery, whose architecture evokes an Extremaduran farmhouse with interior courtyard and views over the sierra, holds the distinction of being the only winery in Spain to produce a late-harvest Viognier. Its wines have achieved 91 points in the Robert Parker guide.

WINE TOURISM

The guided tour takes visitors through the vineyards and all the winery facilities, explaining the production and ageing process, culminating in the tasting room with a commented tasting of three wines. The winery also has its own shop and spaces for private events, weddings and corporate celebrations with a capacity of up to 600 people.
