FORTIFIED AND STILL WINES - TASTINGS AND FLAMENCO - EVENTS [VEJER CÁDIZ]
BODEGAS GALLARDO, the oldest winery in the municipality, follows the centuries-old family tradition of producing and bottling the best wines of the area. It is from Chiclana where in 1987 Manuel Gallardo Romero, a family of winemakers since the XlX century, moved his winery and located it in Vejer, on the banks of the Barbate river, at the foot of the hill of the village, in the area known as La Barca de Vejer. A cool area protected from the winds, a natural port where wine has been traded since ancient times.
La Villa de Vejer is a white village in the south of Cadiz, which is situated very close to the Atlantic Sea, on a hill overlooking Africa. Many civilizations have inhabited this site, which has changed its name over the centuries.
In Phoenician times it was called Beka or Bekkeh, later in Roman times it was Baesipo and in Castilian times it was Vexer and later Vejer. It was also known as Vexer de la Miel, due to the abundance of beehives among the vineyards on its slopes.
The cultivation of vines was an important activity for centuries, due to the natural sunshine and the freshness of its lands, so close to the sea. Its wines, due to their quality, were taken all over the world from the Phoenicians through the Mediterranean to America, in the New World, by the Castilian and Andalusian sailors.
Vexèr wine has always had the reputation of being of very good quality. In 1752, the Grand Lord of Andalusia, the Duke of Medina Sidonia, a wine lover with innumerable vineyards and cellars, gave the Marquis of Ensenada "a barrel of Vexèr wine" as an exquisite and appreciated gift. The cultivation of the vineyard, as well as the olive grove, later, gradually disappears from the countryside of Vexèr but remains in the neighboring Conil and Chiclana.
Today, the team of BODEGAS GALLARDO works with the aim of maintaining the tradition thinking about the future, offering new products that are at the height of what the market demands.
