Four decades later, in 1901, the Bilbao businessman Santiago Ugarte took it over. A pioneer since its creation in making wines from its own grapes, it is the largest owner of vineyards in the municipality of Haro. A total of 250 hectares surrounding the winery, emulating the prestigious French châteaux.

The winery has the oldest bottling record in La Rioja since, from the beginning, its wines were bottled and labeled on the property. The main building houses a surface area of 3,400 m² of subway cellars.

VISIT THE WINERY WHERE VIÑA POMAL WAS BORN

The first vintage of Viña Pomal, the winery's flagship brand, dates back to 1904, the starting point for the birth of a classic. Viña Pomal owes its name to the vineyard where it was born.

Bodegas Bilbaínas was a pioneer and visionary, more than 100 years ago, understanding that oenology must undoubtedly go hand in hand with viticulture. To this end, it gave prominence to the vineyards, the terroir and the grape from the very beginning of its history. Zaco, Vicuana, Paceta, names of plots that today, more than ever, are the living history of Rioja.

Today, it remains faithful to its classic style of reserves and grand reserves, but at the same time surprises with estate wines such as Viña Pomal Alto de la Caseta or Viña Zaco Viñedo Singular, both showing the best expression of Tempranillo, or innovations such as its collection of Singular Wines: Maturana Blanca, white Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha.

Bilbaínas also has exceptional wines such as La Vicalanda, one of its most important references that was born in the early 90s, and with a close link to sparkling wine since its origins with brands such as Lumen and Royal Carlton. And the fact is that in the post-war period of the First World War this winery produced sparkling wines for great Champagne houses, providing it with great knowledge and maximum experience.
