VISIT EL GRIFO WINERY [LANZAROTE]

The island of Lanzarote is linked to the eruptions of Timanfaya (1730-1736), which covered the central part of the island of Lanzarote with lava and volcanic sand. The Lanzarote people, still without finishing the eruptions, began to clear the sands to reach the organic soil and to cultivate vineyards and fruit trees. The farmers found in the vine the most suitable crop for the new reality of the island.

The indoor wine press dates back to 1775, according to the founding inscription. We keep wines from 1881, the year in which the winery was managed by Don Manuel García Durán. There are still standing Muscatel vines from the 19th century.

These primitive installations constitute today our wine museum, an inexcusable destination to understand the beginning of the winemaking of Lanzarote and the Canary Islands.

THE VINEYARD OF THE IMPOSSIBLE

With the Sahara desert as a continental neighbor, Lanzarote only receives an average of 35 days of rain per year. The trade winds bless with their humidity, but the clouds pass by. The volcanic ash maintains that scarce and invaluable humidity.

These pre-phylloxera vines have survived on ungrafted rootstock for more than two centuries. They are cultivated in rows, in pits and in even deeper pits. 
Framed in a landscape that has been a Biosphere Reserve for more than 30 years and is protected by UNESCO, mineral wines are produced here on the ashes of a volcano.
