VISIT BODEGAS RIOJANAS WINERY (LA RIOJA)
More than 130 years of experience in viticulture and quality winemaking have taught this family of entrepreneurs that continuity is achieved from very clear concepts. The first is the vineyard. The 200 hectares of their own vineyards, in addition to the 600 hectares of vineyards owned by trusted growers, are located in different terroirs with clay-limestone soils in the prestigious area of Rioja Alta (D.O. Ca. Rioja), in municipalities near the Ebro River, Cenicero, and even on the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria, such as San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The main variety is Tempranillo, but they also use Mazuelo, Graciano and Garnacha grapes, as well as Viura and Malvasía.
Protecting the family legacy of so many years of history has required from Bodegas Riojanas its unalterable commitment to the care of the vineyard and nature. This responsibility has led them to promote various research projects and initiatives for the preservation and improvement of the vineyard and its environment, for example, with the creation in 2018 of the plot zoning protocol or the opening in 2019 of the Winegrowers School, which promotes the exchange of knowledge about the vineyard and values the role of winegrowers who collaborate with Bodegas Riojanas.
As a result, advances have been made, such as the production of wines without animal traces, the installation of solar panels and other improvements to optimize resources, as well as recognitions such as the Wineries for Climate Protection seal, which certifies the energy efficiency, efficient water management and waste reduction of Bodegas Riojanas.
MONTE REAL SYMBOL OF AUTHENTICITY AND CENTENARY ESSENCE
One of the most important results has undoubtedly been the creation and continuity over time of the winery's emblematic brand, Monte Real.
Monte Real symbolizes the authenticity and essence of the century-old winery. The first bottles were released in 1933 from the vision of the Frenchman Gabriel Larrendant, winemaker of Bodegas Riojanas at the time, who recognized the potential of the El Monte vineyard (Cenicero, Rioja Alta) to produce wines that would become the soul of Bodegas Riojanas and the pride of the winery.
WINE TOURISM VISITS
During the visit to the winery, we will share with you our more than a century of winemaking tradition. The visit to our facilities goes through the original building, more than 130 years old, as well as the extensions that have been made throughout history: production halls, barrel room, bottle cellar and the 'Room of sensations'.
The visit ends with the tasting of three wines (White, Crianza and Reserva) accompanied by an appetizer consisting of a small tasting of Iberian sausages.
The visit lasts about 1 hour and the tasting about 45 minutes.
