Bodegas Rubicón

VISIT BODEGAS RUBICÓN [LANZAROTE]

In the heart of the La Geria Natural Park — Lanzarote's foremost wine-growing area — Bodegas Rubicón occupies the oldest estate in the district, with documents recording activity on the property since 1570. What is today one of the most visited historic wineries on the Lanzarote wine route was for centuries the Cortijo de La Geria, converted into a winery in the mid-eighteenth century and in continuous production ever since. The modern chapter began in 1979, when Germán López Figueras acquired the estate to devote it exclusively to wine production.

The winery manages 30 hectares of pre-phylloxeric vineyard on black volcanic ash, the result of the Timanfaya eruptions of 1730 to 1736. Each vine grows in a conical pit protected by stone walls known as zocos, a system of manual cultivation unique to the island that retains night-time humidity and shields the plant from the wind. The leading variety is volcanic Malvasía, alongside Listán Blanco, Diego, Moscatel, Listán Negro and Negramoll, all ungrafted. The result is a range of D.O. Lanzarote wines recognised at international competitions including the Berliner Wein Trophy and the Decanter World Wine Awards, benchmarks of what the volcanic terroir of La Geria can deliver in the glass.
