FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT WINERIES IN GRANADA

What are the best wine tasting tours in Granada?
All four places on this list offer tastings with advance booking. At Bodegas Calvente (Jete) you taste 5 wines with local produce; at Bodega Cerro de las Cruces (Guadix), 2 wines with a guided commentary and an appetiser of produce from the area; and at Bodega Toral (Graena), 4 to 5 wines paired with artisan products made on site. At Riofrío Caviar Ecológico (Loja), the premium tasting pairs three caviar varieties with Piper-Heidsieck champagne and Viña Monty Viura white wine.
Can I visit wineries on a day trip from Granada?
Yes. Guadix and Graena are in the Granada Geopark, on the northern side of Sierra Nevada; Jete is in the Sierra de los Guájares, close to the Mediterranean; and Riofrío is next to Loja. Visits range from 45 minutes at Riofrío and about 1.5 hours at Cerro de las Cruces to a full 6-hour day at Bodega Toral, which includes lunch at the winery and a visit to the Badlands of the Granada Geopark.
How much does a winery tour in Granada cost?
The tour and tasting at Bodega Cerro de las Cruces costs €12 per person. At Bodegas Calvente, the tour with a tasting of 5 wines and food pairing costs €25 per adult and €10 per child. At Bodega Toral, the 4-hour visit with a vineyard walk and a tasting of 4 wines costs €70 per person, and the 6-hour day costs €170. At Riofrío, the tour with a caviar tasting and a glass of cava or champagne starts at €25 per person (minimum 4 people).
Are there cave wineries in Guadix and the Granada Geopark?
Yes. Cerro de las Cruces, in Guadix, works in caves dug into clay, where temperature and humidity stay stable all year without artificial climate control. Bodega Toral, in Graena, ages its wines in natural clay, and its longest visit includes a 10th-century cave.
What wines are made in Granada?
Granada wineries make dry whites, orange wine, rosés, young and oak-aged reds and brut nature sparkling wines. White varieties include moscatel de Alejandría, Moscatel Grano Menudo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Torrontés, recovered by Bodega Toral; red varieties include Tempranillo, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Vineyards range from 700 metres in the Sierra de los Guájares to more than 1,000 metres on the northern slopes of Sierra Nevada, and many wines are made under the D.O.P. Vinos de Granada.
When is the best time for wine tasting in Granada?
The wineries on this list are open all year with advance booking. At Cerro de las Cruces the visit changes with the season: in spring it focuses on recognising grape varieties, and during the harvest visitors can taste the grapes in the vineyard. Its caves keep a stable temperature all year. Cerro de las Cruces takes groups of 2 to 20 people every day from 12:00 to 13:30 and from 19:00 to 20:30, and asks for at least 3 days' notice.
